DIALOGUE: A TOOL FOR PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE ON FARMERS AND HERDERS CRISIS

AGRO-RANGER UNIT, N.S.C.D.C OSUN STATE COMMAND, ORGANISES A DAY SEMINAR PROGRAMME TO ENSURE PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE BETWEEN FARMERS AND HERDERS IN OSUN STATE.

The memory of Nigeria Civil War should constantly remind Nigerians to give room for dialogue in tackling farmers & herders crisis in the country.

This admonition was given by the Governor of Osun State, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola who was represented by Dr. Charles Akinola the Chief of Staff to the Governor, during  a day seminar programme organized by the Agro Rangers Unit of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Osun State Command held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security conference room in the state, with the theme ”TOWARDS SUSTAINING/ENSURING CONTINUED PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE AMONG FARMERS, HERDSMEN AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS IN AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN THE STATE OF OSUN”

The participants at the seminar includes, the representative of the State Governor, Dr. Charles Akinola, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Honourable Sola Oladipo, Commissioner for Agric Food and Security represented by Mr. Olowoporoku Gboyega, Traditional rulers, representative of Commissioner of Police, representative of Comptroller of Immigration, Head of Farmers in Osun State, Seriki Fulani and other stake holders in Agriculture.

While declaring the seminar opened, Governor Oyetola appealed to farmers and herders to toll the line of peace as his administration is fully committed to ensuring stakeholders in Agricultural sector live in peace.

In his own speech, the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, Mr. Abdulkadir Alao Sulu, said the recent clashes between farmers and herders in the country necessitates the establishment of Agro Rangers unit by NSCDC to combat the menace and give room for development in the agricultural sector.

Commandant Sulu stressed further that, it is pertinent for both Farmers and herders to co-exist peacefully as the incessant conflicts between the two parties have caused heartbreaking damages to property, loss of lives and livelihood.

Also speaking, the Head of Agro Rangers unit in Osun Command, Assistant Commandant Yaqueen explained that the unit has maintained a strong relationship with the chairman, Committee on Peaceful Coexistence between Farmers and Herdsmen in Osun state, Alhaji Mudasiru Toogun in the area of finding lasting solution to the clashes. 

While delivering lecture on the topic, the guest speaker, Mrs. Aluko Oluwaseyi, a lecturer at the department of Animal Health Science in the University of Osun said according to research 80,000 cattle are being slaughtered in the South-West every week for human consumption.

Mrs. Aluko Oluwaseyi Phebian revealed that herders prefer to graze their cattle in the South West due to the fact that South West has a higher percentage of bush to feed cattle, the speaker who also mentioned an  alternative means of feeding cattle as a way of putting an end to clashes between Farmers and herders and  suggested an Intensive  System as the best way of feeding cattle, it deals with absolute confinement of raising cattle, this system preaches Peace, no stress on the herders and animals, it is a cut and carry system.

All the participants at the seminar lauded the NSCDC for the active roles the corps plays to put an end to clashes between herders and  Farmers, describing the corps as God’s sent to farmers and herders.
