A senior colleague of mine once told me that this world is ruled by wickedness and you must hit back with wickedness anytime someone does evil against you. That is, you must pay back evil with evil. You must fight back with wickedness anytime you survive any wickedness meant to pull you down in life. The act of repaying evil back with evil is deeply rooted in the act of revenge.

Revenge is defined as the action of hurting or harming someone in return for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands. It is an act of committing a harmful action against a person or group in response to a grievance, be it real or perceived Wikipedia. Francis Bacon described revenge as a kind of “wild justice” that does offend the law [and] puts the law out of office.

Few people can confidently say that experience no regrets. Sadly, a part of life is all about doing things that you won’t look back on favorably later. It is how we, as human beings, learn and grow!

Every mankind born of a woman has a tendency to fight back against his or her enemies for the evil suffered in their hands. Everyone has this instinct, craving for revenge anytime someone hurts us so much. But God instructs us never to take revenge against anyone who does any evil against us. He specifically warned us in His word. 1Peter 3:9, Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.” Romans 12:17 says, Do not repay anyone evil for evil; consider what is good before all people.” Proverbs 20:22,  Do not say, “I will pay back evil!” Wait for the LORD, so that he may vindicate you.”

Deuteronomy 32:35, “To me [belongeth] vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in [due] time: for the day of their calamity [is] at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.” Romans 12:19,  Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but [rather] give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance [is] mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

God wants us to leave the sword of revenge in His hands because He knows how to avenge for us. Each time you want to take revenge on your enemy by yourself or employing third party, it means that you are telling God that is He is not fit to fight your fight. The determination to take revenge for wrong doings against you makes the evil to prevail over a long period of time. Francis Bacon said, “A man that studieth revenge keeps his own wounds green.” Mahatma Gandhi said, “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” Shannon L. Alder said, “If you spend your time hoping someone will suffer the consequences for what they did to your heart, then you are allowing them to hurt you a second time in your mind.”

Life entangles with; past, present and the future. Oftentimes, we feel the past events can be reversed, we wish we could have our past back to make corrections where we got it wrong. Most times, we dwell so long under the shadow of the past, hoping to have new beginning.

In life, weak people think about revenge, strong people forgive, intelligent people ignore wrong doings. Instead of crying and getting hurt the more for the wickedness of men towards you, just determine to be focused on your goals in life. Determine to smile and laugh the more. Refuse to be angry and bitter. The best revenge is your success and happiness in life. Never venture on a deadly mission to take revenge for yourself. Let it be and let it go from your heart. Set yourself free from the dungeon of revenge.
