Olufunke Oshonaike, a remarkable figure in the world of table tennis, began representing her country at just 14 years old, displaying exceptional talent and earning numerous accolades. Despite facing challenges including sexual, financial, and emotional abuse from someone she trusted, Olufunke refused to be defeated by her circumstances or society’s betrayal.
With unwavering determination, she unleashed her full potential and achieved extraordinary feats. She made history as the first female table tennis player to participate in seven consecutive Olympics, earning her a place in the prestigious “7 Club” of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Olufunke also holds the distinction of being the first African woman in any sport to achieve seven Olympic appearances.
At the Africa Table Tennis Championship at just 14 years old, Olufunke won the women’s doubles, a silver in mixed doubles, and reached the semi-finals in singles. Her success continued with three gold medals in the singles event at three different championships in 1992, 2002, and 2016. Remarkably, she won gold in singles and mixed doubles in 2002 while pregnant with her first child.
Participating in seven consecutive Olympics from 1996 in Atlanta to Tokyo 2020, Olufunke proved to be a powerhouse at the African Games, winning a total of 28 medals in eight games, including 12 gold medals. In 2003, she achieved an incredible feat at home in Abuja, winning gold in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events.

She is one of only 32 athletes approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to contest for the IOC Athletes’ Commission elections.
