Walking in God’s leading requires absolute obedience. Divine instructions are meant to be followed promptly. Many destinies have been aborted simply because people chose their own path instead of following God’s direction.
Life is in phases, and each phase plays a crucial role in shaping who we eventually become in our lifetime. These phases include:
-
The phase of conception – when a man is formed in his mother’s womb.
-
The phase of delivery – when a newborn enters a new world.
-
The human developmental phase – growing from infancy to childhood.
-
The academic phase – where foundational knowledge is acquired.
-
The career phase – where a man chooses his life’s occupational path.
-
The marital phase – where a person chooses a partner.
-
The spiritual phase – which determines a person’s relationship with God.
Each of these phases has its own unique path, yet all are interconnected. To journey through them successfully, we need divine direction. A man who lacks divine direction can end up in the wrong destination—causing delay, frustration, or even total abortion of destiny.
The direction you take in life will either make or mar your future. Anyone who desires a fulfilled life must put God first in all things. Proverbs 3:5–6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Among all phases, the spiritual phase is the foundation for every other phase. When you have a solid relationship with God, He guides you into the right paths, and He does this through His Holy Spirit. John 16:13, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” Isaiah 30:21, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” Your connection with God determines how far you can go in life. Through continuous fellowship with Him, you develop sensitivity to hear when He speaks. God often speaks in gentle, subtle tones, not always in loud or dramatic ways. 1 Kings 19:12–13, “And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave.”
Hearing God requires patience and the heart of a sheep ready to follow. John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
Walking in God’s leading requires absolute obedience. Divine instructions are meant to be followed promptly. Many destinies have been aborted simply because people chose their own path instead of following God’s direction.
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES OF FOLLOWING AND NOT FOLLOWING GOD’S LEADING
Disobedience Brings Destruction — The Young Prophet.
A young prophet was sent by God to Bethel and instructed not to eat, drink, or return by the same road. An older prophet deceived him, and he disobeyed. His disobedience cost him his life. 1 Kings 13:8-29, “ 8And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. 10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel. 11Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. 12And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. 13And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, 14And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. 15Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 18He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. 20And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: 21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, 22But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. 23And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. 25And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 26And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him. 27And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. 28And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. 29And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.” Disobedience to divine instruction has consequences.
Obedience Brings Increase — Isaac
In a time of famine, God instructed Isaac to stay and sow in the land of Gerar. Isaac obeyed, and God blessed him. Genesis 26:1-3,“1And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. 2And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: 3Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;” Genesis 26:12-13, “12Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him. 13And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:”
Divine direction in difficult times brings supernatural results.
Wrong Alliances Bring Danger — Jehoshaphat
Jehoshaphat was a godly king, but he aligned himself with Ahab—a man who rejected God. This alliance almost cost him his life. 2 Chronicles 18:31
“And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him; and God moved them to depart from him.”
Partnerships outside God’s leading can endanger destiny.
Ignoring God’s Leading Can Destroy Destiny — Samson
Samson was chosen from birth, but he ignored God’s guidance in his relationships. His attachment to Delilah became the doorway to his downfall. Judges 16:20–21. “And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him. But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes…”
Relationships outside God’s will destroy even the strongest destiny.
God Closes Wrong Doors to Open the Right One — Paul
Paul desired to preach in Asia and Bithynia, but the Holy Spirit restrained him. Later, God directed him clearly through a vision. Acts 16:6–7, “Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. Acts16:9–10, “9And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. 10And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.”
Sometimes God’s “No” leads to the right “Yes.”
God Gives Clear Leading Through Vision and the Spirit — Peter
Peter was praying when he received a vision that prepared him for a divine assignment. The Holy Spirit then instructed him directly. Acts 10:19–20, “While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.”
God confirms His leading through His Word, Spirit, and divine encounters.
DANGERS OF NOT FOLLOWING GOD’S LEADING
Destruction and Loss — Saul
Saul disobeyed divine instructions, and it cost him his throne. 1 Samuel 15:22–23, “And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.”
Unnecessary Danger — Jehoshaphat
Jehoshaphat entered a relationship God did not approve, and it nearly cost him his life.
Loss of Destiny — Samson
Ignoring God’s leading cost Samson his strength, vision, and purpose.
Wandering Without Progress — Israel
Israel refused God’s instruction to enter the Promised Land, and wandered for 40 years. Numbers 14:33–34, “33And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness. 34After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.”
Missed External Blessing — The Rich Young Ruler
He rejected God’s leading and walked away from the greatest invitation of his life. Mark 10:17–25, “17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. 23And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”
Following God’s leading guarantees safety, direction, and fulfillment in every phase of life. His instructions are perfect, His timing is flawless, and His path always leads to destiny.
