The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, has successfully dismantled and destroyed an illegal mining site at Sambisa Area, Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government, Osun State.
The operation, which took place on Friday, January 31, 2025, was led by the State Commandant, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, as part of the Corps’ intensified efforts to combat illegal mining activities and protect Nigeria’s solid mineral resources.
ILLEGAL MINING SITE DISCOVERED THROUGH INTELLIGENCE GATHERING
Speaking at the site, Commandant Sotiyo revealed that the illegal mining activities were uncovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance. He emphasized that such enforcement actions are necessary to curb the growing menace of illegal mining in Osun State, which poses serious environmental and economic threats.
“This illegal mining site was discovered through intelligence gathering and surveillance. Our action today is aimed at putting an end to unlawful mining activities in Osun State. Illegal miners must understand that the NSCDC is fully committed to enforcing the law and safeguarding the nation’s solid mineral resources,” Sotiyo stated.
SUSPECTS CONFESS TO ILLEGAL OPERATIONS
During the operation, some suspects were apprehended and confessed to operating without the necessary licenses or authorization. The NSCDC boss warned that the crackdown on illegal mining would continue, stressing that individuals engaged in these unlawful activities must desist or face the full weight of the law.
EQUIPMENT MINING DESTROYED
As part of the enforcement action, the NSCDC set fire to various pieces of mining equipment found at the illegal site, including: Draglines, Pumping machines and other tools used for illegal mining
Commandant Sotiyo further stated that some suspects managed to flee the scene, abandoning their equipment, but assured the public that efforts were underway to track them down and bring them to justice.
“The suspects arrested during the operation will be charged to court. Although some managed to escape, I assure the public that they will soon be apprehended and made to face the consequences of their actions,” Commandant Sotiyo affirmed.
CALL FOR PUBLIC COOPERATION
The NSCDC Osun Command is urging members of the public to report any suspected illegal mining activities in their communities. This, according to the Command, will help in the fight against environmental degradation, economic sabotage, and the illegal exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources.
“We appeal to residents to provide useful information that will help in tackling illegal mining in Osun State. Together, we can protect our environment and ensure our resources are used lawfully for the benefit of all,” Sotiyo concluded.
The NSCDC remains steadfast in its commitment to enforcing laws governing the mining sector and ensuring that only licensed operators conduct mineral exploration and extraction in Osun State.
