Sequel to her show of interest to wade into the crisis rocking the Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari has appealed to northern leaders to learn from their southwest counterparts on how to enthrone women.

The First Lady in another post on her verified Instagram page @aishambuhari told northern leaders to take a cue from “the exemplary practice of their South-West counterparts in appointing women as deputies.”

She said when they do it would serve as “a gradual approach to obtaining gender inclusion in our polity.”

This was her second post Mrs. Buhari had shared over the crisis within the Adamawa APC since she decided to intervene in the dispute. In the first post on her Instagram concerning the issue, she had said “In the name of Allah, I wish to thank Adamawa State APC Leaders for the courtesy visit they paid on me, on November 18, 2022.

“As an indigene of the State, a mother a Grand Mother and the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I would like to reaffirm my support for the genuine concern of our party leaders, as well as COMMIT TO STEPPING INTO THE PROBLEM so that reason and common sense will prevail in Adamawa politics.”

Her intervention follows months of dispute in the APC in the state, concerning it’s governorship ticket.

It could be recalled that the May 26 2022 primary election of the Adamawa APC produced Aishatu Binani as winner. However, one of her main opponents a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu had gone to court to contest her emergence.

Consequently, a federal high court in Yola, the Adamawa capital, had nullified the primary in October, but an appeal court in the state upturned the lower court judgement and restored Binani’s candidacy in a ruling delivered on Thursday, November 24, 2022.

It was learnt that the First Lady who was reportedly supporting Ribadu, seems to have thrown her support behind Binani’s candidacy with her appeal to northern leaders.

The second post from Mrs. Buhari reads “I would again like to repeat my appeal to respected leaders in the North to learn from the exemplary practice of their South-West counterparts in enthroning women as deputy governors in states as a gradual approach to obtaining gender inclusion in our polity.

“This is a most realistic step in our efforts at attaining gender justice instead of supporting the pursuit of the misplaced ambition of an individual do-or-die politician.”
