In anticipation of the planned nationwide protests over economic hardships, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 2,050 personnel across Osun State to maintain order and protect critical infrastructure. The announcement was made by Dr. Michael Akintayo Adaralewa, the Commandant of the NSCDC Osun State Command, during a press conference at the command headquarters in Osogbo.
Dr. Adaralewa emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and urged protesters to respect the rights of others. He cautioned against any form of violence or destruction of public utilities, warning that such actions would be met with strict legal consequences.
“We recognize the economic challenges facing our nation, and while citizens have the right to express their grievances, it is imperative that these expressions remain peaceful and within the bounds of the law,” stated Dr. Adaralewa. He further urged protesters to avoid obstructing major roads and highways, which could disrupt the daily lives of non-protesters.
The Commandant underscored the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, a core mandate of the corps. He reminded the public of the lasting damage caused by previous unrests, such as the EndSARS protests, and called for vigilance against any attempts to hijack the protests for destructive purposes.
“We have strategically deployed personnel to key locations to ensure the security of lives and property,” Dr. Adaralewa continued. “Our officers have been briefed to conduct themselves professionally, respecting human rights and adhering to international best practices.”
In his address, Dr. Adaralewa also appealed to parents and guardians to educate their children on the importance of peaceful protests and the dangers of engaging in violent activities. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious behavior or plans to disrupt the protests.
“We urge the law-abiding citizens of Osun State to remain calm and go about their daily activities. Our commitment is to maintain peace and order while safeguarding the constitutional rights of all citizens,” he concluded.
The NSCDC’s proactive measures aim to prevent a repeat of the disruptions and damages seen during past protests, ensuring that the state remains safe and orderly during this critical time.
