In a deeply moving story of resilience, love, and academic excellence, twin brothers Matthew and Matthias Busoye have emerged as the best graduating students from the Faculty of Technology at the prestigious University of Ibadan—and they are dedicating their success to one woman: their mother.

Graduating with identical First-Class degrees and an impressive CGPA of 3.94 in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the Busoye twins were crowned the overall best students in both their department and faculty for the 2023/2024 academic session.

A MOTHER’S LOVE AGAINST ALL ODDS

Speaking during the faculty’s induction ceremony, Matthew recounted the heartbreaking moment that forever altered their family’s path—the death of their father, Mr. Moroof Ganiyu, when they were just 12 years old. That tragedy left their mother to raise four children—two in university and two in secondary school—alone, without a clear source of income or any form of financial support.

Amid pressure and uncertainty, the twins’ mother made a life-changing decision that set the tone for their journey.

“If all we have is garri, we’ll drink it together,” she told her children after declining a relative’s offer to take them in separately.

That singular moment of unity and determination, Matthew said, became their guiding light.

SLEEPLESS NIGHTS AND SILENT SACRIFICES

Matthew reflected on the endless sacrifices their mother made to keep the family afloat. From sleepless nights to multiple debts, she bore the full weight of their dreams. With a touch of humor and deep appreciation, he added:

“My mum did more ‘TDBs’ (Till Day Break) calculating debts than I did in all my years at UI.”

Her strength, they said, was not just emotional but strategic—ensuring that her children never lacked the basics, never begged, and never gave up.

HONOURING BOTH PARENTS

Matthias, in his own heartfelt tribute, honored their late father while echoing his brother’s gratitude to their mother. He acknowledged the vital role her resilience and tough decisions played in shaping their academic and personal development.

“Her resolve gave us stability. Her belief in us gave us courage. Her prayers carried us through,” Matthias shared.

A TESTAMENT TO PERSEVERANCE AND UNITY

The story of Matthew and Matthias Busoye is more than just an academic milestone—it is a compelling reminder of the power of family, unity, and a mother’s unwavering love.

In a world that often overlooks quiet sacrifice, their story shines as a beacon of hope to single parents, struggling students, and anyone fighting battles in silence.

As the twins take on the next chapter of their lives, they carry with them not just the honor of academic excellence, but the legacy of a mother who refused to give up.
