The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Osun State, under the leadership of Commandant Michael Adaralewa, has apprehended a man, Oladiti Saheed Toyin (32), of No. 2, Lakewu area, Ororuwo, Boripe Local Government area, for posing as a medical doctor. He is accused of attending to a pregnant woman during childbirth, resulting in her death.

During the suspect’s parade on Thursday, 2nd May, 2024, at the NSCDC state headquarters on Iwo-Ibadan road, Ido-Osun, Osun State, Commandant Michael Adaralewa disclosed that the suspect, whose highest qualification is a Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), has been running an unlicensed clinic for six years and two months. He also had individuals undergoing training in his clinic as staff.

He claimed that the woman could not continue her antenatal care at her previous hospital due to a misunderstanding with her husband. The self-proclaimed doctor said he checked her blood pressure, which was low, and prescribed some drugs. He instructed her to return when she went into labor.

On Thursday, 18th April 2024, the woman began experiencing labor symptoms and delivered a baby at the clinic. However, she developed complications shortly after and was rushed to a licensed hospital nearby, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect was involved in training individuals to become quack doctors like him, charging them a fee of Five Thousand Naira (N5,000).

Commandant Adaralewa stated that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law under Section 343(1e) of the Criminal Code Act, which provides for the misdemeanor of endangering human life or causing harm by giving medical treatment in a negligent manner.
