Genesis 11:6, “And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.” There is something powerful about this scripture that we must understand. God Himself acknowledged the power that can be released when people are united in purpose, agreement, language, and determination. They were one people. They spoke one language. They had one purpose. Their minds were aligned, their efforts were coordinated, and they were determined to accomplish what they had conceived in their hearts. God said, “Nothing will be restrained from them.” This does not mean that everything human beings determine to do is approved by God. The people at Babel were pursuing an agenda that was contrary to God’s instruction. However, the passage reveals an important principle: unity, agreement, focused thinking, and determined action can produce extraordinary results.

If people can become so powerful through unity and determination—even when their purpose is misplaced—how much more can a person become when his or her life, mind, faith, and purpose are aligned with God?

GOD CREATED YOU WITH THE CAPACITY TO ADVANCE

From the beginning, God did not create man to live as a victim of circumstances. Genesis 1:27–28 reveals that man was created in God’s image and likeness, and God blessed him and gave him a mandate: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it…” This means that there is something of God’s nature and capacity that He has entrusted to humanity. We carry God’s image. We have been given the capacity to think, create, build, lead, influence, solve problems, reproduce, and make meaningful impact. Therefore, when we talk about an unstoppable person, we are not talking about someone who will never experience opposition. An unstoppable person is not someone who will never face difficulties, rejection, disappointment, failure, resistance, or delay.

Rather, an unstoppable person is someone who, despite opposition, refuses to abandon the purpose of God for his or her life. They may bend, but they will not break. They may fall, but they will rise again. They may experience delay, but they will not abandon their destiny. They may encounter opposition, but opposition will not have the final word. Their confidence is not in their own strength but in the God who called them.

GOD HAS PUT SOMETHING IN YOU

God has given every human being unique abilities, capacities, gifts, ideas, experiences, and opportunities through which His purpose can be expressed. There is something God has designed you to accomplish. There are people you are called to influence. There are lives your obedience is meant to touch. There are things you are called to build. There is an impact your life is capable of making. And there is a legacy that should remain even after you leave this world.

Therefore, the question is not simply:

“What can stop me?” The deeper question is: “What is capable of stopping me from becoming everything God has ordained me to become?” Because sometimes, the greatest enemy of destiny is not outside a person. It is within the person. Sometimes, the greatest battle is not against the devil. It is against self.

WHAT CAN STOP A MAN FROM FULFILLING GOD’S PURPOSE?

A person may have the potential to become great and still fail to fulfill God’s purpose because of what is happening within. Wrong thinking can stop you. Fear can stop you. Pride can stop you. Unforgiveness can stop you. Laziness can stop you. Indiscipline can stop you. Negative self-perception can stop you. The wounds of the past can stop you. Wrong relationships can stop you. A lack of perseverance can stop you. A refusal to grow can stop you. And sometimes, the person you need to overcome before you can overcome your greatest obstacle is yourself.

This is why dealing with self is so important. You can pray against external enemies while carrying an internal mindset that is fighting your own destiny. You can ask God to open a door while your fear prevents you from walking through it. You can ask God for a new season while still thinking with the mentality of your old season. You can leave Egypt physically and still carry Egypt mentally. That was the tragedy of the children of Israel.

DEALING WITH SELF: THE GREATEST ENEMY TO DESTINY

Self is one of the greatest enemies an individual must intentionally deal with in order to become all that God has destined them to be. Sometimes, the greatest limitation to our progress is not the devil, our environment, or the people around us—it is self.

Self is a person’s unique sense of identity, consciousness, character, mindset, and individuality that distinguishes them from everyone else. Who you are, what you believe, how you perceive life, and how you respond to circumstances all form part of what we call self.

What you believe about yourself, about God, about life, and about your circumstances can either make you or destroy you. Your perception of life, your level of perseverance, your steadfastness, and your ability to remain faithful in difficult seasons will greatly determine whether you triumph or surrender.

THE MIND CAN BECOME A PRISON

One of the greatest ways self can hinder a person is through the mindset formed by past experiences. Ugly experiences from the past can cage the mind. When a person has suffered for a long time, been rejected, failed repeatedly, or lived under difficult circumstances, those experiences can become a lens through which they interpret everything that happens in the present. The person may have physically left the past, but the past may still be living inside their mind.

This is what happened to the children of Israel. Israel came out of Egypt physically, but Egypt did not immediately come out of them mentally. They were delivered from slavery, but they still carried a slave mentality. God had demonstrated His mighty power in Egypt through extraordinary signs and wonders. They had seen the Red Sea divided. They had experienced God’s supernatural provision. They had witnessed God’s faithfulness repeatedly. Yet, whenever they encountered a new challenge, they often responded from the mindset created by their past rather than from their knowledge of God. Psalm 78:11 says they forgot His works and the wonders He had shown them. This is a serious spiritual lesson: you can experience the acts of God and still fail to understand the ways of God. The Bible says: “He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.” Psalm 103:7. Israel knew the acts of God, but Moses understood something deeper—the ways of God. The acts of God reveal what God can do, but the ways of God reveal who God is and how He operates.

When you understand only the acts of God, your faith may depend on what you can see God doing. But when you understand the ways of God, you learn to trust Him even when you cannot see what He is doing.

THEIR PAST AFFECTED THEIR RESPONSE TO THEIR PRESENT

This was one of the greatest problems of the Israelites. Whenever they faced a challenge, they repeatedly questioned God, complained, murmured, and tested Him. When they were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Red Sea, they said: “Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness?” Exodus 14:11–12.

Think about it: they had just witnessed God’s power in Egypt, yet when they encountered a new challenge, their past experience of slavery influenced their response to their present situation. They had seen God defeat Egypt, but they could not believe that the same God could handle the Red Sea. That is what a wrong mindset can do to a person. A person can witness yesterday’s miracle and still doubt God because of today’s challenge. The Israelites repeatedly tested God because they failed to develop the mentality of people who had been delivered. Numbers 14:22 records that they repeatedly tested God and failed to trust Him despite seeing His signs and wonders.

Their problem was not that God lacked power. Their problem was that their hearts and minds had not fully adjusted to the new reality of their lives. They had come out of Egypt, but Egypt was still influencing their thinking.

YOU MUST DEAL WITH SELF

There are battles that cannot be won merely by changing your environment. Sometimes, you must change yourself. You can change your location and still carry the same mindset. You can leave Egypt and still think like a slave. You can enter a new season and still respond with the mentality of your old season. You can receive a new opportunity and still sabotage it because of an old perception. You can pray for God to change your circumstances, while God is saying, “I want to change you.” God does not only want to take you somewhere; He wants to prepare you for where He is taking you. That is why Romans 12:2 says: “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The transformation God desires in our lives begins from within. Before God changes what is around you, He may need to change what is inside you. Before He entrusts you with a greater assignment, He may need to enlarge your capacity. Before He takes you into a new dimension, He may need to deal with the old mindset that cannot survive in that new dimension.

YOUR SELF MUST COME UNDER GOD’S PURPOSE

If self is allowed to remain in control, it can become a serious enemy of destiny.

Self says, “I cannot.”

Faith says, “God can.”

Self says, “This is how it has always been.”

Faith says, “God is doing a new thing.”

Self looks at the size of the problem.

Faith looks at the greatness of God.

Self is controlled by past experiences.

Faith is anchored in God’s promises.

Therefore, we must intentionally allow God to deal with our fears, wrong beliefs, limitations, pride, stubbornness, negative perceptions, and unhealthy responses. God wants to transform us so that our character, mindset, desires, and responses can fit into His purpose for our lives. The greatest evidence that God is taking you into a new season is not always a change in your environment; sometimes, it is a change in you.
