Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni OFR, Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its core mandates in light of the proposed nationwide protest. He emphasized that the NSCDC will not tolerate any acts of violence, disruption of peace, law and order, destruction of property, looting, or vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure.
Dr. Audi underscored the NSCDC’s core mandate to protect vital national infrastructure, including oil pipelines, electrical power installations, communication equipment, railway gadgets, the Safe Schools Initiative, and other utilities essential for public welfare. He stressed that any damage to these assets would severely impact the nation’s economy and assured that the Corps, having enhanced its intelligence and operational capabilities, is prepared to counter any threats to government infrastructure.
“The NSCDC is a Federal Government Paramilitary Agency with statutory roles and responsibilities, leading in the protection of all critical national assets and infrastructure across the nation,” Dr. Audi stated. “I have directed all State Commandants, Provosts of Colleges, and Heads of various formations to remain on high alert, ensuring the security of these vital assets is taken seriously.”
Dr. Audi reiterated the Corps’ unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of Nigerian citizens. “We will not stand idly by and allow any fifth columnists to incite Nigerians and youth against the Federal Government under the guise of demonstrations or protests,” he warned.
Acknowledging the current economic hardships, Dr. Audi noted that these challenges are not unique to Nigeria but are part of a global economic downturn driven by inflation, food supply shortages, and environmental changes. He assured that the government is working diligently to address these issues and alleviate the public’s suffering.
Dr. Audi urged Nigerian youths to resist being manipulated by faceless, antigovernmental elements with ulterior motives behind the calls for protests. He called for cooperation, patience, and engagement in peaceful dialogue with the government.
He also encouraged student bodies nationwide to reconsider their stance and take advantage of the Student Loan Scheme, which offers interest-free loans to help Nigerian youths pursue formal education and vocational training.
“While we recognize the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens to hold peaceful protests, indicators suggest that the proposed protests could be hijacked by criminal elements and non-state actors,” Dr. Audi cautioned.
In light of these concerns, the NSCDC and other security agencies are working together to prevent any breakdown of law and order, ensuring public peace and security. The NSCDC advises youths, intending protesters, Civil Society Organizations, NGOs, and CBOs to avoid participating in ill-motivated protests. Dr. Audi called for objectivity, civility, and constructive engagement in seeking government attention through peaceful channels.
