Everything about God is a wonder. His name, His word, and His mighty acts manifest wonders. “God thundereth marvellously with His voice; great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend” (Job 37:5).
Have you ever imagined how His word alone brought forth all the creatures we see today? Out of the abundance of His word, the heavens, the earth, the plants, the creatures in the air, in the oceans, and even beneath the earth were created. By His spoken word, He created man in His own image and gave him dominion to rule over the affairs of the earth. “And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:26-28).
Many Scriptures point to the wonders of God that no man can fully comprehend. “Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion” (Isaiah 8:18). “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth” (Revelation 5:10). “And hath made us kings and priests unto God and His Father; to Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (Revelation 1:6). “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
Yet, despite this glorious destiny of wonders, there are enemies that stand against its manifestation. Some of these enemies are external, while others are internal.
THE ENEMIES OF WONDER
SATAN – The Chief Adversary
The number one adversary of our wonders is Satan. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
Satan does not have the ultimate power to stop God’s plan, but through his craftiness, he lures people out of God’s presence to hinder the manifestation of their wonders. He leverages on human weaknesses and shortcomings to obstruct divine purpose. This is why Jesus called him “a liar, and the father of it” (John 8:44).
Satan tempted Adam and Eve in the garden, robbing them of their divine dominion (Genesis 3:1-6). He tempted Jesus Christ in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), but unlike Adam, Christ overcame him with the Word. The devil is a sworn enemy of our destiny of wonders.
SIN – The Destroyer of Wonders
Satan uses sin as a major tool to deprive us of our wonders. Paul listed the works of the flesh that war against our divine inheritance: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:19-21).
- Samson was ordained to be a deliverer of Israel, but he lost it on the lap of Delilah (Judges 16:4-21). His lust corrupted his wonder.
- Eli’s lineage was destined to serve God as priests forever, but because of the wicked acts of Hophni and Phinehas, which Eli refused to correct, the priesthood was stripped from their family (1 Samuel 2:27-30).
- Moses, in anger, struck the rock instead of speaking to it as God commanded, and as a result, he was denied entry into the Promised Land (Numbers 20:7-12).
Sin will always short-circuit God’s plan.
OUR MINDSET – Limiting Our Own Wonders
Our mindset can become a great enemy of wonders. When the twelve spies were sent to spy out Canaan, the land God had promised Israel, they all confirmed it was a good land flowing with milk and honey. However, ten of them brought an evil report out of fear, saying, “And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:33).
Only Caleb and Joshua held on to faith, declaring, “If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not” (Numbers 14:8-9).
Because of the negative mindset of the ten spies, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for 40 years, and only Joshua and Caleb entered the Promised Land.
Our words and thoughts can either align us with God’s wonders or cut us off from them. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21).
UNBELIEF – The Faith Killer
Unbelief is another enemy of wonders. God works in the atmosphere of faith. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).
Jesus could not do many mighty works in His hometown because of their unbelief. “And He did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (Matthew 13:58).
The Israelites, though delivered from Egypt with signs and wonders, could not enter the Promised Land because of unbelief. “So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief” (Hebrews 3:19).
Unbelief shuts the door of miracles and makes one forfeit divine wonders.
DISOBEDIENCE – The Silent Killer of Destiny
Disobedience to God’s instructions is a great enemy of wonders. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it” (Isaiah 1:19-20).
- King Saul lost his throne because of partial obedience. He spared King Agag and the best of the spoil when God commanded complete destruction. Samuel said to him, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, He hath also rejected thee from being king” (1 Samuel 15:23).
- Jonah disobeyed God’s call to Nineveh and ended up in the belly of a fish until he repented (Jonah 1:1-17).
Disobedience always leads to delay, destruction, or denial of God’s wonders.
SLOTHFULNESS – The Enemy of Diligence
Slothfulness or laziness is another enemy of wonders. God blesses the works of our hands, not our idleness. “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich” (Proverbs 10:4).
- The slothful man is described as one who always makes excuses: “The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets” (Proverbs 26:13).
- The sluggard refuses to plow during planting season and so has nothing to harvest. “The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing” (Proverbs 20:4).
- Hebrews 6:12 warns, “That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”
Diligence is key to manifesting wonders. “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” (Proverbs 22:29).
God has destined us for wonders. We are created to be signs and wonders to our generation. But to manifest this destiny, we must overcome the enemies of wonders: Satan, sin, wrong mindset, unbelief, disobedience, and slothfulness.
When we align ourselves with God through holiness, faith, obedience, and diligence, nothing can stop us from manifesting the wonders He has ordained for us.
