Hope is a confident assurance that God will do what He has promised, even when we do not yet see the results. It is a strong desire or expectation for a positive outcome, mixed with trust and confidence that it will surely happen even when there is no visible sign of it.

In the Bible, rejoicing goes beyond just feeling happy — it is a deep, spiritual joy rooted in God’s goodness, promises, and presence, regardless of circumstances.

When we combine these two key ideas together, rejoicing in hope means having a deep, spiritual joy anchored in God’s goodness, promises, and presence, irrespective of what we are currently going through. It means being overwhelmed with joy for the good things to come, even when the present reality looks contrary.

Two Dimensions of Our Hope

As believers, our hope exists in two forms:

  1. Hope to Fulfil the Purpose of Our Creation: God created each of us with a divine assignment and unique purpose. Our hope in this life is to walk in that purpose, manifesting His glory on earth, and becoming a blessing to others. Jeremiah 29:11 says: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” This earthly hope keeps us focused, joyful, and determined, knowing that our present trials are stepping-stones toward God’s ultimate plan for our lives.
  2. Hope to Reign with Him in Eternity: Beyond this world, our greater hope is eternal — the assurance that after our journey on earth, we will reign with Christ forever. John 14:2–3 says: “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” This eternal hope strengthens us to endure, remain faithful, and rejoice in anticipation of everlasting glory with Christ.

For example, when a farmer plants seeds on his farmland, he cannot see the harvest at the moment, yet he can imagine the abundant crops that will spring forth in the coming months. That imagination produces an overwhelming joy within him — the joy of the harvest to come!

Foundation of Our Hope

Romans 5:1-5 provides us with a solid foundation to rejoice in the things to come, regardless of our present challenges: “1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Similarly, 1 Thessalonians 5:16 commands: “Rejoice always.”

That is why the lifestyle of true Christians who are deeply rooted in the things of the Spirit is different from that of mere Christians or unbelievers. What would throw others into depression becomes a platform for us to rejoice. What others see as misfortune becomes a pointer to great exploits. What others regard as disadvantages becomes the avenue to manifest our strengths. Our ways of life are not normal to the people of this world because our joy is rooted in spiritual realities and God’s eternal promises and not what people can see now.

Virtues That Keep Us Rejoicing in Hope

  1. Faith. By faith, we are justified and redeemed from eternal condemnation; by faith, we are reconciled to God through Christ Jesus, which gives us unending peace. By faith, we have access to grace that keeps us standing. By faith, we have the hope of His glory. By faith, we command our joy from the realm of the spirit to manifest in the physical. Faith provides a solid foundation to stand in tribulation. Through faith, we develop perseverance, godly character, and unwavering confidence in God. Hebrews 11:1-2, “1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.” 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
  2. Perseverance. Perseverance is another vital Christian virtue. It reflects steadfastness, endurance, and unwavering faith even in the face of trials. James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Hebrews 10:36, “For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise.”
  3. Godly Character. Christians must develop godly character to reflect the true image of the One we believe in. Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” A godly character is produced by the Holy Spirit. As you hope for greatness, character is what sustains you when you finally receive it.
  4. Understanding Times and Seasons. Everyone has an appointed time. You cannot use another person’s season to determine yours. We may be born on the same day, attend the same school, graduate together, and even finish with the same grade, yet our seasons of manifestation will never be the same. Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” Satan uses our ignorance of times and seasons to rob us of our joy by making us compare ourselves with others. Isaiah 55:8-9, “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.’” Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says the Lord, ‘thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.’” Be like the men of Issachar: 1 Chronicles 12:32, “Of the sons of Issachar who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their command.” Your understanding of God’s timing will give you inner rest.
  5. Study the Word of God. Studying and meditating on God’s Word equips believers with spiritual understanding and practical wisdom. 2 Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
  6. Prayer and Fasting. Prayer connects us to God, while fasting humbles our flesh and sharpens our spirit. Together, they build spiritual capacity and release supernatural power. Principalities and powers do not want your joy to manifest, so you must subdue them through prayer and fasting. Matthew 17:21, “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
  7. Boldness and Courage. Every Christian needs boldness and courage to stand firm in the faith and confront life’s storms with confidence in God’s promises. 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
  8. Obedience. Obedience is a vital virtue for every believer. God blesses those who not only hear His Word but also obey it. Isaiah 1:19, “If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” 1 Samuel 15:22, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” Obedience opens the door to God’s favor, blessings, and the fulfillment of His promises.
